Pneumonia

Pneumonia has many causes and causes many deaths in mini pigs and piglets. The sooner you get treatment for your pig the higher the survival rate.

If your piglet is showing any signs please see your vet for prompt diagnosis and care:

  • Coughing more than a day
  • Shallow Breathing
  • Rapid Breathing
  • Lethargic
  • Going off feed
  • Low temperature or high temperature.
  • Sudden weight loss
  • A “thumping” in the chest or hard breathing,  this is later and very critical.

Causes of Pneumonia:

  • Bacterial
  • Viral
  • Lung Worms
  • Sudden changes in Weather
  • Stress
  • Over Populating pig pens
  • Aspirating milk from bottle feed
  • Aspirating food
  • Chemicals (dirty pens have urine and fece gases)
  • Dust
  • Environmental Irritants
  • Untreated Upper Respiratory Infections

Treatment:

Your vet has access to the best drugs to treat pneumonia, I prefer Exceed with Benamine every 12 hours, some prefer Nuflor or Batril, all can be prescribed by a vet.  Typically over the counter antibiotics are not strong enough for pneumonia.
